When may my child begin school?

*Black Oak Mine offers both a one year and a two-year Kindergarten program.

*Children enter Kindergarten - the one year Kindergarten (K) program - if they turn five on or before September 1 of that school year.

*Children enter Transitional Kindergarten (TK) -the two-year program which is a year of Transitional Kindergarten (TK) and a year of Kindergarten - if they turn 5 between the dates of Sept. 2nd and June 2nd of that school year.

*The TK program presents a gift of time to help support younger children to become socially and academically ready for entry into a traditional Kindergarten setting.

*All enrollment in K and TK is based upon birthdate, class size, assessments & developmental readiness.

*All TK and K students begin school in August.

*TK and K are offered at all school sites. You may not be sure if your child is ready for Kindergarten or Transitional Kindergarten. Talk with your child’s preschool teacher or the TK or K teacher(s) before school starts to discuss any of these issues. If your child has special needs, be sure to talk to the school and teacher before your child enters school. Teachers and all school personnel want to make sure that all children are successful as they transition into school.

TK and K Programs

Black Oak Mine Unified School District offers a rich, experiential based TK and K at all sites: Georgetown School of Innovation, Northside STEAM School, Otter Creek School and American River Charter Homeschool Program. Some classes are multi-age - either TK/K or K/1.

Children in both the TK and K programs take part in projects, skill development, small group activities, partner work, rich literacy, math and science activities and a lot of play, social-emotional learning and hands on experiences. Children sing, create art, begin writing, and early reading - spending time with books, as well as sharing, making friends and exploring nature.

How is the Transitional Kindergarten Program different from Kindergarten?

A transitional year of Kindergarten means that your child will experience a positive socially and emotionally appropriate year and be exposed to the concepts and skills taught in Kindergarten at a pace that is appropriate for them. There will be more focused activities for social-emotional development, speaking and listening and fine and gross motor development. Children will interact and experience hands-on math, literacy, music, science and art in a rich play and center based program. Your child will then be fully ready for Kindergarten the following year. We are very excited to offer this program to all families in our area.
